Sonic Superstars Review – Nostalgia with Touch of Freshness

Jan 31, 2024 By Eleanor

The latest iteration in the Sonic universe, the Sonic Superstars game combines the old 2D gameplay and action with a vivid graphic appeal. Arzest created the following video game in the Sonic franchise, combining the classic Sonic gaming experience with action-packed and bright graphics.

The game has 12 excellent zones, each with different difficulty settings to engage casual and hardcore gamers. It offers rich sound, catchy graphics, customizable controls, and unlockable content while advancing to higher levels. Along with other famous characters, you can play a brand new character, Trip, the first addition to the original since the 90s.

Different Game Modes

The Sonic Superstars is like other games in the Sonic series that require players to travel fast and speedily while avoiding obstacles. You can earn and use medals as currency instead of winning Chaos Emeralds. It has different modes and challenging enemies to make it enjoyable for the players and explore new aspects.

The following modes are available in the game:

Adventure Mode

In adventure mode, there are 11 zones that you, as players, can travel across while exploring all the worlds and many stages. Power-ups, rings, and other boosters are also collected to overcome enemies and bosses. This mode consists of three individual stories to follow and unlocks after completing the previous one.

Racing Mode

Racing mode lets players compete and gain an advantage with other characters in various racing tracks using vehicles, items, and shortcuts. This model includes several types of races: Grand Prix, Time Trial, and Battle Race. Players can also customize their vehicles and unlock new ones as they progress.

Player Battle Mode

In this mode, the players demonstrate their skills and expertise to other players and can compete. A maximum of eight players can compete with their characters in various mini-games and distinct types of challenges such as racing, fighting, and puzzle solving.

How The Coop Works?

The Co-op mode in Sonic Superstars allows you to team up with your friends and family and play together. Players can use their characters to compete against other teams in various challenges.

This mode is available in the main menu. Players can choose to join a public or private lobby as per their choice. They can select their favorite characters from the Sonic universe and customize their appearance and abilities. The Coop mode also has a ranking system that rewards players for their performance and teamwork.

While the game has many modes and maps, the biome distribution isn’t different from the old games. Some might think, where is the originality? While making a game true to its roots is good, a new biome or recent additions would have brought it to the present.

Nostalgia is one thing, but it seems a rip-off when it stays the same, and nothing is unique other than a few powers.

The Speed in the Game

The speed of the characters varies according to skills and attributes. It varies by the environment, terrain, and obstacles and affects the performance of characters in different events.

The Sonic, Shadow, and Blaze characters are naturally fast and have a speed advantage. Other characters like Knuckles, Amy, and Vector are slower. These characters have strengths of power and agility.

The game allows players to use shoes, rings, and power-ups

to enhance their character's speed.

With speed comes danger and obstacles that are difficult to avoid, and you must be quick about avoiding them. There are certain instances where the game seems against you, but maybe that's what comes with all Sonic games.

The Game Mechanics

Sonic Superstars looks and plays similar to previous Sonic Series games, as its mechanics are based on the classic platforming genre with some twists and innovations. The opening stage and bridge island feel much like Green Hill Zone. There are hints toward something more innovative and creative. It has automatic loops that boost you across all directions of the stage. It allows you to go off the beaten path and explore secret areas.

The player controls one of the many characters from the Sonic franchise. Each character can provide an immersive gameplay experience. The game features various levels, each with different obstacles and enemies. The game also has a multiplayer mode. Eight players can compete or cooperate in multiple challenges and mini-games.

When it comes to different bosses, there is tons of variety in the bosses’ mechanics, and it keeps the game fresh and entertaining. But one move or mechanic is always over the top and hits hard. Sometimes, it is unavoidable and where most of the game's frustration comes from.

The Soundtrack

The game also has a dynamic soundtrack which changes according to the actions and emotions of the characters. The soundtrack consists of original songs and remixes of classic Sonic tunes by various artists and musicians. The music in the game reflects the personality and mood of each character and stage, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for the players.

The soundtrack also incorporates rock, pop, techno, and orchestral elements to suit the diverse themes of the game. The soundtrack in the game of the Sonic Superstars is one of the main attractions and highlights for the players.

Final Words

This Sonic Superstars brings significant changes to the upcoming game of the Sonic franchise. The game introduces a new character, “Trip," the first addition from the original character since the '90s. The bosses were inventive and smart but often dragged on with unfair instant-death attacks. The music is catchy and energetic but with poor sound quality. The list is again enlarged with some excellent additions to the playlist. The single-player mode is still full of fun, but the multiplayer modes seem disappointing compared to earlier Sonic games.

Highly Favorable
